VANASTRA, ONT. As the sun sets, the Oud Brothers gaze proudly at their newest creation, an illuminated Radome. “This is like the water tower of most towns, but now this water tower is lit up so everyone can enjoy it,” says Stephen Oud. Since early December, the Oud Brothers have been illuminating Vanastra’s landmark for people to enjoy from as far away as the eye can see.

The first of two 670 megawatt coal-fired electric plants in Centralia, Washington, will close permanently Dec. 31. The closure means the layoff of 64 employees, including 38 members of IBEW Local 125. The second coal plant will close in 2025. That’s 10 and 15 years earlier than the expected useful life of the two plants.
The closures are part of an effort by the State of Washington to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The state had want-ed to close both plants in 2015, but a December 2011 agreement between the state and Canadian coal plant owner TransAlta delayed the closures, giving TransAlta an opportunity to recoup its investments and committing the company to set aside $55 million for a Coal Transition Fund to cushion the blow for workers and the community.

CENTRALIA â Drivers travelling on Whalen Line near Highway 4 can catch a glimpse of some unique Christmas decorations.
The Mills family decided to set up decorations with a âGrandma Got Run Over by a Reindeerâ theme on their front lawn which features lights and mannequins which hearken back to the classic Christmas song.

Judy Mills said the idea for setting up the eye-catching decorations came after participating in the Villages United Church Halloween Mystery Tour, where homes throughout the community decorated for Halloween and invited those taking the tour to decipher a mystery code to win prizes.
